So, why choose Austria for your next adventure?
The picture-postcard scenery alone is a huge draw for visitors, with the spectacular Tyrol region boasting everything from snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes to gorgeous green pastures and picturesque cities. Austria’s cities are equally as breathtaking as its countryside, with Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg all combining grand architecture with modern influences.
But, it’s not just the scenery that makes Austria a top holiday destination, it’s the culture too. Whether its music, art or even food and drink, the country’s rich culture shines in so many ways, from Viennese coffee house culture to remarkable landmarks, palaces, museums and galleries.
Got food and drink on your mind? Influences from Germany, Switzerland and other European countries are prominent, and when combined with Austria’s own traditions, you’re in for plenty of mouth-watering delights! Whether you fancy a sweet treat from a coffee shop or one of the iconic sausages from a Würstelstand, you won’t go hungry when holidaying here.
Browse key sights and the popular tours you can see them on.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Austria is sure to please. You’ve got the iconic Sachertorte, a classic chocolate sponge cake coated with apricot jam and topped with chocolate icing. And, there’s the popular pastry dish Apfelstrudel, a beloved apple dessert usually paired with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Coffee is a huge part of Austrian culture – so much so that Viennese coffee house culture is recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO! And, that means one thing; you’re in for a good cup of coffee.
Simple yet renowned for their flavour, you’ll find these delicious sausages at Würstelstande, or sausage booths, throughout Vienna. The two most popular sausages are the frankfurter and käsekrainer, and are often enjoyed with a cold beer.
The national dish of Austria, this thin, breaded and deep fried meat dish is usually made from veal. The dish is actually protected under Austrian law, stating that if it is to be called Wiener Schnitzel, it must be made with veal.
With so much on offer, you might need some inspiration! We’ve hand-picked a selection of favourite destinations and provided an overview of the very best highlights...
Palaces
There’s not one, but two incredible palaces in Vienna. The former summer residence of the Hapsburg family, Schonbrunn Palace impresses with its Baroque architecture and magnificent gardens – there’s even a zoo! The Hofburg Palace stands in the city centre, and is now the home of the Austrian president! With its wealth of history and culture, it’s a must-visit.
Museums
Austria played a crucial role in the development of many art forms, so it’s no surprise the museums are world class. Kunsthistorisches Museum houses the imperial art collection and one of the world’s richest coin collections, and be sure to visit the innovative MuseumsQuartier, which is home museums such as Leopold, MUMOK and more!
St. Stephen’s Cathedral
As one of the most important Gothic structures in Austria and the symbol of Vienna, St. Stephens’s Cathedral is a landmark you’ll certainly want to see. Boasting a 137-metre-high spire and an intricately decorated roof, you’re guaranteed to be impressed!
Getriedegasse
The famous Getreidegasse is a shopping street in the bustling heart of Salzburg’s old town. Traditional shops steeped in history sit alongside international fashion chains, and as the birthplace of Mozart, this charming street has something to suit everyone.
The Sound Of Music
Salzburg is the scene-stealing backdrop to ‘The Sound Of Music,’ and you should definitely explore the various set locations around the city whether you’re a fan or not. From Mirabell Gardens and Schloss Leopoldskron to Hellbrunn Palace and Church Mondsee, you’re in for a wonderful journey!
Hohensalzburg fortress
An unmistakable feature of Salzburg’s skyline, Hohensalzburg Fortress sits high above the rooftops of the historical district. Inside, you’ll find several museums which showcase almost 1,000 years of history, and be sure to enjoy the panoramic city views from the tower.
Lake Mondsee
Situated on a crystal-clear lake of the same name, Mondsee is a picturesque village with plenty to see and do. The town’s most famous sight is the Basilica of St. Michael, which is the church where Maria and Georg von Trapp were married in ‘The Sound of Music’. Other highlights include the charming main square and attractive promenade.
St. Wolfgang
Nestled on the banks of the Wolfgansee, St. Wolfgang is known for its pilgrimage church. According to legend, Saint Wolfgang threw an axe down the Schafberg and its landing point marked the location for the church. The town itself is full of character, with quaint cobbled streets, pretty painted houses and delightful cafés.
St. Gilgen
Found on the northern shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, St. Gilgen is an idyllic village known for its association with Mozart. A museum can be found in Mozart House, which was the birthplace of his mother and the home of his sister. The town’s traditional Alpine architecture is delightful, and other sights worth visiting include the Gut Aich Priory and Town Hall.
Innsbruck
The capital of Tyrol, the beautiful city of Innsbruck is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and steeped in history. Explore the picturesque old town with its famous Golden Roof, enjoy a spot of shopping on the bustling Maria Theresien Street or climb the City Tower for panoramic views.
Lake Achensee
The largest alpine lake in Tyrol, Lake Achensee will take your breath away. A natural beauty spot, its eye-catching colours range from emerald green to ultramarine, and with remarkable mountain scenery as a backdrop, it’s no surprise this is a popular place with both tourists and locals.
Ziller Valley
One of the most beautiful valleys in the whole Alpine area, the Ziller Valley is a great destination to explore. Nestled at the end of the valley is Mayrhofen, a traditional Austrian ski resort offering spectacular views, and you’ll also find Fugen nearby, which has plenty of cafés and an attractive centre.
