The Colosseum
An iconic symbol of Rome, the Colosseum was the site of many gladiatorial fights, and today remains an imposing sight of architectural wonder. It's a must-see of any visit to Italy's capital and is the cornerstone of exploring ancient Rome.
Vatican City
The world's smallest sovereign state, discover grand architecture such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Apostolic Palace, and works of art with medieval and Renaissance influences in the Vatican Museums.
Trevi Fountain
A stunning example of exquisite Baroque design, it is believed that throwing a coin into the fountain with your right hand over your left shoulder will ensure a return visit to Rome. Give it a try!
St. Mark's Basilica
The most important religious temple in the city of Venice, the Basilica is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe. With a unique mix of architectural and art styles, it is a testimony to the wealth and power of the city's history.
Bridge of Sighs
Linking the Doge’s Palace to the prison cells on the opposite side of the canal, romantics claim that lovers would find eternal happiness by kissing under the bridge at sunset, however the name actually comes from the sighs heard as prisoners crossed the bridge to the prison!
Grand Canal
One of the major water-traffic corridors in Venice, the Grand Canal is lined with palaces, churches, hotels and public buildings on either side, displaying fine examples of High Renaissance architecture. Rialto Bridge spans the canal, and until 1854, this was the only point at which the Grand Canal could be crossed on foot.
Florence
Tuscany is often referred to as the cradle of the Renaissance, and Florence is the jewel in the crown. Steeped in culture and with endless historic treasures, discover Piazza del Duomo, the city's Cathedral Square, which is a perfect reflection of Renaissance architecture and home to the awe-inspiring Duomo (cathedral). Other key sights include Santa Croce Church and the Uffizi Gallery.
Pisa
See one of Europe's most famous sights, Pisa’s famous leaning tower, on our Picturebook Italy tour. Standing on the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), the tower was already tilting when it was completed in 1372!
Siena
Extremely rich in history and art, be sure to explore the beautiful Piazza del Campo, one of the largest and finest medieval squares in the world. Central to Sienese life since 1300, the square also plays host to the Palio horse race twice a year.
Sirmione
The ancient fortified town of Sirmione is situated on a peninsula on the south of the lake. Picturesque and elegant, it is home to independent boutiques and eateries, as well as the 13th-century Scaligero Castle and the Roman ruins of the Grotte di Catullo.
Limone
Located on the western shore of Lake Garda, Limone – once renowned for growing lemons and citrus fruits – has charming, narrow lanes lined with shops, restaurants and gelaterias. The wide promenade offers spectacular views of the lake and highlights include the Chiesa di San Benedetto, Chiesa di San Rocco and the old lemon grove, the Limonaia del Castèl.
Malcesine
Small and charming, Malcesine is a beautiful town with curved, cobbled streets, and has a fantastic range of shops and restaurants. It is crowned by the medieval Scaliger Castle, and the charming harbour is the perfect place to take photos and relax with a drink. Monte Baldo overlooks the town and a cable car ride to the top is the best way to soak up the spectacular mountain and lake views – it really is breathtaking!
