Today we visit the historic town of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius on our optional excursion. Painstaking excavations, which are still ongoing, began in the 18th century and have uncovered a remarkable hidden city. Accompany your expert guide around the town, walking along roads with indents from the passing of chariot wheels and discovering the remains of homes, shops and public baths (entrance to the ruins is included). Today’s optional excursion takes us along one of the most spectacular roads in Europe, the ‘Amalfi Drive’. The winding cliff top road offers breath-taking panoramic views at every bend. We pause above the beautiful town of Positano, before continuing on to Amalfi, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. Amalfi was once a prosperous Marine Republic, powerful and prosperous and is now a thriving holiday resort. The unmistakable cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral, which stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi and also Scotland – Saint Andrew. Here you will have time at leisure to explore the largest and most popular town of this coast; boasting medieval architecture and colourful façades. Take the opportunity to enjoy this splendid jewel on the peninsula. From Amalfi we travel to Ravello, which nestles in the hillside and is considered by many to give the best views of the area. Here you can visit villa Rufolo (entrance extra), which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous operas, Parsifal. Situated on a ledge over Amalfi, Ravello has been the inspiration for artists and gardeners for many years.

Many early morning starts and some late arrivals in the evening. 4-Star Hotels but mostly only 2-Star food. Good excursions.

Good transfer system. Helpful and informative drivers. Optional trips expensive. Unfortunate Location of hotel. No nearby shops. Very steep hills either direction from hotel. Difficult for those with limited mobility… one said they felt trapped. Staff at hotel clearly valued local events/ guests much higher than us! Our transfer driver in return went the wrong way ( on a straight road). Had to be told by passenger. Wasted 40 minutes resulting drivers rest time before we got to our stop so we’re told wait an hour or make your own way home. Certainly not expected after the professionalism of all other ledger staff.

This was a poignant trip as my son and I visited several places my late wife and I visited on our 40th wedding anniversary in 2004 She loved Italy and we did it in her memory

This was a great holiday. We had very good drivers who were helpful and who ensured that we got the most out of the places we visited. Hotels were generally good and clean with friendly staff who were willing to sort out minor problems.

Our drivers Dave and Mark were excellent, very knowledgeable and we were kept well informed of arrangements at all times along the way. Hotel in Sorrento was lovely but food was awful, transfer hotels were more than adequate. Obviously very long travelling days so probably wouldn't do this length of trip again but would consider a shorter UK trip.
