Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in central Amiens, where we stay for four nights. The hotel is close to the Cathedral, the Somme River and many restaurants.
Amiens saw the arrival of Allied soldiers in 1914, and briefly the Germans, but soon the battle moved to the flat fields beyond the city. This morning, we follow the battles between the French and Germans here in the early part of the war.
We visit the preserved trenches at Soyecourt, the massive German Cemetery at Vermandovillers, one of the ‘destroyed villages’ of France at Fay, and the graves of French soldiers at Lihons. This includes the memorial to Alan Seeger, the American poet and writer who fell with the French Foreign Legion on the Somme in 1916.
After lunchtime in St. Quentin, we look at the German attack here in March 1918, the so-called ‘Kaiser’s Battle’. We look at the defence of Manchester Hill, visit Savy British Cemetery where many of the dead from March 1918 are buried, look at the defence of the Somme Canal and finish at the Pozières Memorial to the Missing.

This morning, we start in Amiens and visit the important St Pierre Cemetery where dead from both WW1 and WW2 are buried. At Vignacourt, we visit the museum, which was a photographic studio during the conflict, and see the amazing collections of images showing ordinary ANZACs, British Tommies, and French Poilu.
After lunch, we look at how soldiers went on rest away from the battlefields and did their training, and the role of the medical services looking at Nurses and Doctors who worked in the Base Hospitals. We visit Abbeville Communal Cemetery and Extension, see the impressive Chinese Cemetery at Noyelles which commemorates men of the Chinese Labour Corps, and visit Mont Huon Cemetery on the French coast, close to where one of the Base Hospitals was located.

Today we look at the final battles around Amiens in the summer of 1918, when the path to Victory began and are often seen as the birth of modern warfare. We examine the battlefield at Villers-Bretonneux where Australian and British soldiers stopped the Germans in their advance on Amiens, seeing Adelaide Cemetery and discovering the story of Australia’s Unknown Warrior. We visit the Australian Museum in the town and see how local French school children still remember the ANZACs.
After lunchtime in Corbie, we visit the Sir John Monash Centre at Villers-Bretonneux, seeing the cemetery and Australian Memorial to the Missing, as well as spending time at this important new centre which remembers the Australian contribution on the Western Front.
We then visit the Australian Memorial Park at Le Hamel, seeing the memorial and preserved trenches, and follow the Canadian attack in August 1918 seeing their Memorial at Le Quesnel.
